On 20 January 2026, at 11:30, the first seminar organised by MiDiS will take place: “Citizenship from Below: How Migrants Perceive the Link between Citizenship and Integration in Italy and Spain”, with Claudia Finotelli (Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Sociology of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid) as speaker and Irene Ponzo (DISSTE Researcher and Deputy Director of MiDiS) as moderator.
The seminar will explain how citizenship studies have largely focused on the institutional configuration of citizenship regimes as a tool to promote integration, while overlooking migrants’ subjective perceptions. By comparing Italy and Spain, Claudia Finotelli will illustrate how, in both countries, the acquisition of citizenship is associated with an increased sense of well-being and trust. At the same time, she will show how feelings of belonging are undermined by perceived discriminatory attitudes in everyday interactions, highlighting that the legal inclusion granted by naturalisation is not sufficient to ensure full integration.
